Metropolis : Places of loneliness of Renato Costrini
Metropolis is the place where humanity have chosen to develop their circle of activities and life. It was thought that the development of the cities could contribute to improve the quality of life. Actually and against all expectations, the metropolis has represented instead the place where people have found themselves emptied. They are forced to follow rules that, sometimes, are lacking in values or real justice and, as a result, don’t bring welfare and serenity.
In this way, we witness the anguished representation of human beings that lost their identity and now wander, as they were emptied silhouettes, to reach their false and often misleading goals.
The essence of man, rich in creativity and fantasy, gets lost in the loneliness...one is alone in the crowd and this is the paradox that makes you think. It leads us to reconsider, more consciously, the real nature of a metropolis where it’s easy to get lost like in a labyrinth.
It’s easy to remember the beautiful Futurist film “Metropolis” by Fritz Lang, dating back to 1927. In the first half of the last century, it was already depicted the decline of the dream about a perfect Metropolis, that only created alienated people.
